Cambridge is home to several neighborhoods, most of them called “Squares”, all with their own unique vibe. West Cambridge is home to some of the region’s oldest and most historic homes with Huron Village as its commerce center alongside the new outcroppings along Fresh Pond Parkway. Harvard Square is probably the most renowned Cambridge neighborhood as it is home to one of the country’s finest universities, Harvard and virtually down the street from another one of the country’s finest universities, MIT, just past Central Square. Harvard Square is home to the head of Brattle Street which is lined by stately, historic colonial, Victorian, federal style and some mid century modern homes as well. Central Square and Porter Square are a nice mix of mid-rise Harlow style buildings, east coast ‘3 deckers’, Victorians, and much more, all three neighborhoods are right on the Red line and are in the thick of wonderful restaurants and shops. Cambridgeport is between The Charles and Central Square and is home to the similar housing options as Central Square but opens up a little more in terms of the density of the neighborhood. East Cambridge reminds me more of Charlestown or South Boston with more flat fronted rowhouses and ‘3 deckers’ and was previously the most industrial part of Cambridge (which gave way to more ‘loft’ style options) and is on the Green line. Kendall Square is the newest residential area of Cambridge and houses many larger scale mid to high rise buildings (many of which are rental buildings) and is also the biggest Tech and Biotech hub in the area.
